Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Matthew 10:8
Into the sunset hills
Yesterday the hills were mist-washed clouds painted into the margins of the sky. Today they are cardboard cutouts, crisp and clear coloured, rising like toy-book photographs from the paddied plains.
Pounding west into the soft focus sunset, we arrived at Theni after two hours of rural India. After the constipation of Madurai, the relative freedom of the country roads was a relief. Of course this is India, so one never escapes domestication completely. Even twisting through the acacia scrub foothills, the next village or nest of adobe houses is just around the corner.
Theni itself nestles on the last of the plains before the Western Ghats’ pass take you over India’s spine into Cochin and Kerala. Here new apartment blocks shine with the hope of tourism and impending prosperity. The town itself is more old-India, seething with cycles, rickshaws and people. ‘What is your first impression when you get home after visiting India?’ I was asked. ‘Where are all the people?’ was my immediate reply.
Crusade, small but fruitful
I was here for four days of crusade meetings. The red-dirt downtown location should have been ideal. But sadly we clashed with a major Hindu festival, and the crowds were otherwise occupied. It was sad, because the arrangements had been made so well, and clearly a lot of work had been done. But the 500 or 600 faithful who attended each night enjoyed the touch of Jesus – many were healed of various ailments, including at least two receiving new sight, and a partially deaf man declared that he was now hearing perfectly! Children were healed of fever, and women of stomach troubles. For many though, the full fruit will be some time in the maturing. Altogether, some 150 recorded decisions for Christ, and every one is worth the journey. At this event our ‘So What Happened?’ booklet had been translated into Tamil, and given to all the new believers, the first time we have used it in a crusade setting.
While in Madurai I also had the chance to visit our beautiful orphan children cared for by John Arul of Love and Care India. We have almost 1,000 children there, desperately need sponsors for about half of them. If you are interested, please do visit the Child-Link website, www.child-link.org.
Thank you so much for your prayers! I am writing this sitting in Chennai airport between flights. Next stop Nepal! I will be doing a two day School of Healing, followed by outreach meetings, then am due to go up country for Saturday. Nepal is currently facing a fuel crisis, and rioting in the eastern provinces. Please pray that there is fuel for the folk to get to the meetings, and things have quietened down. Pakistan also has its problems as ever…
