Nepal April 2009 reconnaissance - here we come!
I was first there two years ago, when in a small crusade we saw over 500 decisions for Christ, and many healed. The spiritual hunger was tangible, and the open door compelling. At the time I was not sure that it was us who the Lord wanted to respond, but since the burden didn’t go away, I was convinced that we needed to do something about it!
So I went this time to extend my knowledge of the country and its needs, and to meet people. I travelled outside Kathmandu for the first time: to pretty Pokhara, ancient capital of the kings, and down to Nepalgunj, hot, and hard by the Indian border. I asked lots of questions! What is the greatest need for the kingdom of God in Nepal, and how can we, as outsiders, best help?
It is harvest time in Nepal - here wheat is threshed outside Nepalgunj. Spiritually it is also ripe for harvest. We cannot ignore it.
Not surprisingly, the answers depended on the region and the ministry focus. But some things were clear. The church is growing at an unprecedented rate, being now between half and one million strong in a nation of 29 million! Almost all this growth has happened in fifteen years. There is a great need for evangelism in the regions, the villages, and the many unreached tribes, especially along the remote borders. Many large towns, including Nepalgunj (200,000), have never had a crusade in their whole history. Most villages have no Christian witness at all.
There is a huge need for humanitarian aid in these regions too, with very low literacy, education and medical care. There is consequently great ignorance about basic health, diet, life and farming skills.
Within the new, vibrant church there is a dearth of teaching on discipleship, leadership, unity, and spiritual gifts. Surely the harvest here is ripe, but there is a great need for workers. Ministries are springing up to train local ‘barefoot missionaries’, but they need resources, including finance, Christian literature and humanitarian aid to go alongside the evangelism – a most effective technique here.
Due to the unprecedented political opportunity, many other outside missions are now in Nepal, though few leave the capital. The current Maoist government is redrafting the constitution, and when it is completed, no one knows what the future will hold. I really feel a strong urgency in my spirit to respond with all haste.
I therefore feel that we, JFM, must make a commitment for the long-term, that is, as long as we are able, so that we can truly do something that will make a difference. I want to return, not once but on an ongoing basis. I don’t want to do one or two meetings and feel we have ‘done’ Nepal. I believe we should seek to encourage teams to go and minister as best we can, in whatever ways the Lord has gifted us.
Nepal and New Zealand have, thanks to Sir Edmund Hillary, a special relationship. I have already found many who feel a ‘pull’ towards that nation. Well, here is a God-given opportunity to do something about it! I believe that where one can slay a thousand, two can slay ten thousand. The resources of JFM are limited. But pooled with others, our small contributions together can really make a difference. Why not plan to come with us? Be a part of the process and the programme! Then have the privilege of personally seeing what your contribution can achieve.
I believe we can offer to hold leadership training, Schools of Healing and small crusades in the short term. Later on we might be able to hold larger crusades, and organise humanitarian outreach.
Does this grab your attention? If so, we’d love to hear from you. Nepal, you are in our hearts, and on our agenda! Here we come!
